Has Your Car Got Too Much Tech?
By mike on Aug 26, 2010 in Advice and tips
I’ve only been driving for a few years and I do really like my car. Sure its ten years old but it’s reliable and does all the things I need it to do. This is namely transport me from A to B and occasionally keep the rain off my head. I get no end of mocking from my mates however as their cars are a lot newer and have more gadgets than the inspector himself. I’ll admit that some developments can be useful, but for the most part they are a waste of space and cause more aggro than they save. Here are just three reasons why I’m not going to be pressured into upgrading
1.) Causes more problems than solves. I find myself endlessly trying to calm my friend down on the phone when his keyless entry system decides it doesn’t like the look of him and locks him out for hours on end. Or consoling a mate whose parking sensor fell asleep during a vital parking moment. The fact is, the less technology in your car, the fewer things there are to go wrong and the greater chance you’ll have a stress free drive
2.) Over dependence. Ask your granddad how he managed to get around in his old Ford Cortina and he’ll tell you that he only had the position of the sun to guide him and a dipping stick to work out how much petrol he had left. And yet, he’ll also tell you that he never got lost and never ran out of petrol. He may be stretching the truth a little, but I would put money on the fact a higher percentage of road users run into problems such as these nowadays. The reason being that relying on a sat nav system with 60 million roads in its data center is all well and good, but when it successfully navigates you to Percy Drive, Toronto, rather than Percy Drive in Miami where you live, you suddenly realise it’s not so clever.
3.) Theft. You might consider my view of the world too negative, but as far as I’m concerned the more tech you have in your car, the more of a target it becomes to thieves. Criminals are only human and they want to be listening to Dolby surround sound as they hotwire you car and have a perfectly air conditioned 15 degrees environment to drive in whilst being chased by the cops. For these reasons (among others) it’s almost always the flash cars that get targeted. This can however be a decision the thieves come to regret in a car chase with cops as the car’s built in speed limiter kicks in and the sat nav guides them down a dead end housing estate.
